A slip isn’t a failure: how to get back on track

2026-01-11

A slip often feels like “everything is ruined”. In reality, what matters most is what you do next.

A slip vs. a relapse

One cigarette (or even a few) doesn’t erase your progress. A relapse starts when you decide: “Since I slipped, I may as well continue”.

Three steps back to the plan

  1. Stop. Name it without self‑attack: “Yes, I smoked.”
  2. Lower the tension. Water, a shower, a short walk, a quick note.
  3. Extract the lesson. What was the trigger? What can you change next time?

The “gentle restart”

  • Remove leftovers (cigarettes/ashtray).
  • Open your program/bot and do the next step.
  • Set one specific protection for tomorrow (e.g., “I drink coffee outside for 3 minutes without smoking”).

Stability is built not from perfection, but from returning.
