Sometimes it feels like “I just wanted one”. In reality, an urge is usually triggered by something specific: a situation, an emotion, or a body state.
Common triggers
- Autopilot: a familiar time/place (balcony, commute, usual spot).
- Emotions: irritation, anxiety, boredom, fatigue.
- Social: “everyone goes out to smoke”, alcohol, parties.
- Body: hunger, lack of sleep, dehydration.
A 20‑second check
- What happened right before the urge?
- What am I feeling?
- What do I truly need: a pause, calm, connection, relief?
Replace the meaning, not the shape
If smoking meant a pause — take a pause (step outside, walk). If it meant calm — breathe, tea, music. If it meant connection — message someone.
A helpful phrase
“This is a trigger, not an order.” The urge is a signal that you need support. A cigarette is just an old way to cover that need.
